Winter Light
The last two years I stayed home more than I had before. During that time, I started writing short stories. These writings were full of details. In my mind I could go to many places even while remaining at home. I thought it could be exciting to combine the stories with a visual thread, one that in contrast was free from narrative. Part of my practice has included making drawings. Sometimes the paper I draw on is not quite the right size for the drawing. If the paper is too large, I tear off a piece, and if it is too small, I attach another piece to it. I’m always a bit reluctant to tear paper, therefore I have always saved the leftover pieces and have them lying around. Lately with the winter light, when the ground is covered with snow, there is a brightness in my studio that illuminates the space inside. Encouraged by that light I made many pictures of these torn off pieces of paper. The personal nature of the stories I wrote, alongside the more abstract photographs I took of blank pieces of paper formed a parallel experience created by bringing the two together. The more pictures I took, the more ideas I had for stories and the more I wrote, the making of the images became more intuitive.
